The illuminated text sculpture “I Don’t Have Another Land” takes its origin from graffiti that the artist Nathan Coley discovered in Jerusalem in the mid-2000s. The striking phrase is intentionally ambiguous: it might refer to the historical significance of the site, but can also be read as a comment on contemporary issues of belonging and identity.

Once one of the largest railway stations in Europe, Anhalter Bahnhof became a point of forced departure and displacement from 1933 onwards. Countless people fled into exile from here – persecuted by the Nazis for being Jews, intellectuals, for their art, their political convictions or sexual orientation. Between 1941 and 1943 more than 9,600 Berlin Jews were deported from Anhalter Bahnhof to ghettos and concentration camps.

Today only the entrance portal of the station remains. With the programme At the Ruin – initiated by the Exilmuseum Foundation Berlin in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn AG and the Heinz and Heide Dürr Foundation – this historic site will be strengthened as a place of living memory and culture.
